This introductory class is designed for the beginner looking to discover what it means to be a Western Herbalist. This fun-filled experiential series is suitable for anyone with an interest in increasing their awareness of the native medicinals and wild weeds in our repertoire for health and wellbeing.
CLASS 1: JULY 14th - INTRODUCTION TO WESTERN HERBALISM / HERBS FOR NOURISHMENT & DIGESTIVE HEALTH
In this class we will explore what it means to be a Western Herbalist and cover the basics of making proper herbal teas (we call them infusions and decoctions). We'll also explore how to use herbs to support digestive health and end the day with making delicious herbal condiments – a great way to incorporate more herbs into your diet!
CLASS 2: JULY 28th - HERB WALK / GROW YOUR OWN HERBS
We'll begin the day with an herb walk (location TBD) and then head over to one of our herb gardens for some hands-on experience with our native medicinals and wild weeds. We'll cover plant identification, the importance of growing your own medicine (it's easy!), what and when to harvest, growing techniques and more. Everyone will bring home a plant to tend in their own gardens, deck or windowsill! This class will be taught by Jaime Pawelek, an awesome herbalist, bee biologist and gardener.
CLASS 3: AUGUST 11th – MEDICINE MAKING TECHNIQUES
In this class we will cover the basics of making herbal medicine including: herbal oils and balms, glycerites, tinctures and syrups. Students will bring home everything we make including a first-aid and pain salve, a fresh ginger glycerite, a sleep and stress tincture, elderberry syrup and more!
CLASS 4: AUGUST 25th – SPA DAY!
Discover the art and magic of making your own aromatic floral waters (hydrosols) using the stove-top method. Hydrosols are the basis for many high-end skin toners and we’ll incorporate the hydrosols we’ll make in class with other botanical ingredients to customize our own skin tonics. In addition, Cheryl will discuss the skin-healing and regenerative properties of many different vegetal oils and butters, as well as different emulsifiers, essential oils and antioxidant-rich botanicals while demonstrating how to make a wonderfully rich anti-aging lavender-frankincense moisturizer. Participants will take home all products we’ve made in class with ample handouts and recipes for further exploration.
