Native Bees

California Native Bees in Herbal Gardens

with Jaime Pawelek

Saturday, May 20th from 11-1pm

Did you know that California is home to roughly 1,600 species of native bees?! While most people can recognize a honey bee and perhaps bumble bee, few are aware that so many other types are pollinating our native, ornamental, and agricultural lands. Jaime Pawelek, a native bee expert and garden designer, will speak about the importance of these pollinators, then give a brief overview of their biology and ecology, including info on their life-cycle and nesting needs.  You will learn about the most common native bees visiting herbal gardens during each season, as well as their very favorite plants.  Jaime will also provide info on how to start your own bee garden to encourage these valuable pollinators to visit your own home habitat.

Jaime Pawelek, owner of Wild Bee Garden Design, has been studying native bees for over 10 years.  She worked in the Urban Bee Lab at UC Berkeley for several years where she learned about the close relationships of bees and plants.  She now has her own garden design company where she helps homeowners and businesses create valuable pollinator habitats, full of native and drought tolerant plants.  She also continues native bee studies with the San Francisco Bee Cause and other native bee researchers, where she assists them with bee identification. Studying Western herbalism at Gathering Thyme, Jaime now has new appreciation for many of her favorite plants…not only are they beautiful, providing food for bees and other pollinators, but they can help heal us as well. For more information about Jaime, please visit: Wild Bee Garden Design

Hydrosols and Essential Waters Made From Your Kitchen

with Alice Encinas-Duvernell, Natural Cosmetic Designer & Consultant

Sunday, June 11th from 9:30-1pm

In this introduction to the medicinal and cosmetic virtues of hydrosols, students will learn how to make 100% pure hydrosols from scratch with easily accessible plant material and kitchen tools. Hydrosols are considered to be the future of aromatherapy. The reason why is that their pH is very balanced, and easy on the skin; they are much safer to use than essential oils. They can be used safely on elders, children and babies and people with fragrance intolerance. Hydrosols can be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, rejuvenating, toning, and can help in the treatment of hair loss, depression and anxiety, digestion, teeth and gum problems, insomnia and skin problems. Most hydrosols can be used externally and internally.

Students will also experience and learn about the properties and uses of 6 different hydrosols for the skin, the body and the mind. They will be introduced to many exceptional samples of more rare and exotic hydrosols. The teacher will discuss about how and when to pick plants, what plant parts are the most aromatic, the good manufacturing and sterilization process, pH levels, as well as, blends and bonus recipes.

Participants will take home a:

  • 4 oz. bottle of freshly made hydrosol
  • 1 oz custom made, hydrosol based, facial mask

Cleansing Oils & Toners

with Alice Encinas-Duvernell, Natural Cosmetic Designer & Consultant

Saturday, September 9th from 10am to 4pm

This class is an introduction to alternative ways of deeply cleansing the skin with oil formulas and hydro-based cleansers. This ancient, greatly prized, but forgotten method is an excellent substitute to replace overly abrasive and soap-based facial cleansers. These modern methods of cleansing the skin often result in outbreaks or excessive dryness. Alice will explain the process of how to make efficient recipes based on a choice of ingredients specifically chosen for each skin type. Many precious raw ingredients will be presented and discussed for their properties and benefits. The emphasis will also be put on pH levels (acid and alkaline toners), cleansing protocols, preservation systems and anti-oxidant systems.

In the second part of the class, students will be initiated into the art of making natural, high-quality hydro-tonic toners with botanical ingredients, cosmeceuticals, hydrosols, and hydroxy-acids from fruits and natural acids. These toners will procure in-depth cleansing, which refines and tones the skin and reduces open pores. Students will create their own master recipe spreadsheet and blend a water-based toner and an oil cleanser, based on their own particular skin types. This recipe will also be custom scented with organic essential oil blends.

Students will take home:

  • a 1 oz cleansing oil
  • a 2 oz facial toner

Students are welcome to bring their own botanical extracts, essential oils or favorite toner to use in their recipe or share with the class.
